St. Edward School students listened to Officer Eddie Savage, of the Waterloo Police Department,
talk about staying drug free at the annual Red Ribbon Week kickoff, held on Wednesday. Officer Savage told students about
the problems of drug and alcohol abuse that he has seen first hand, right here in the Cedar Valley. He gave examples
of how illegal drugs can get you arrested and ruin your life. Students were left with the positive message that hugs are much
better than drugs.
Red Ribbon Week began following the 1985 murder of Kiki Camarena, a
law-enforcement officer killed by drug dealers in Mexico. The week was established in Camarena’s memory after his friends
began wearing red ribbons to show support for the fight against drugs.
